Abstract

1489342 Silicon aluminium oxynitride JOSEPH LUCAS Ltd 6 Dec 1974 [29 Dec 1973 20 June 1974] 60144/73 and 27332/74 Headings ClA and ClJ [Also in Division C7] A sintered ceramic comprising a single phase silicon aluminium oxynitride obeying the formula where 0<Z#5 is formed by reacting a mixture of AlN and SiO 2 at 1200-2000‹ C., the mixture also containing two oxides which form with the SiO 2 a silicate having a lower liquidus temperature than either metal oxide would form with SiO 2 alone (preferably at least 100‹ C. lower). Suitable oxides are MgO, Al 2 O 3 , a Mn oxide, Li 2 O, TiO 2 a B oxide and Fe 2 O 3 . Examples are given of forming a ceramic where z= 1 using MgO with Mn 3 O 4 , Li 2 O or TiO 2 ; where z = 0À8 using MgO with Mn 3 O 4 , Mn 3 O 4 + F 2 eO 3 , Li 2 O, Li 2 O+B 2 O 3 , or Li 2 O+B 2 O 3 +Al 2 O 3 ; and where z=4 using Li 2 O+Al 2 O 3 . The mixture may contain Al 2 O 3 in addition to that needed to react with SiO 2 , and in the examples, the mixtures contain large amounts (e.g. over 80%) of Si 3 N 4 . The mixture may be hot pressed or pressed isostatically.
