Abstract

1485384 Sintered ceramics JOSEPH LUCAS Ltd 6 Dec 1974 [29 Dec 1973] 60145/73 Heading C7D A sintered ceramic is formed by heating a mixture of Si 3 N 4 powder (containing some SiO 2 ) and two metal oxides, e.g. MgO and iron oxide with or without pressure, the oxides being such that they form with the SiO 2 a silicate having a liquidus temperature below that of the silicate which would be formed with either of the metal oxides alone, preferably at least 100‹C lower. In an Example Si 3 N 4 powder with 2% MgO and 4% iron oxide is placed in a graphite die and subjected to 1À5 tsi and 1750‹C for 1 hour.
