Abstract

1410503 Ceramics; glass manufacture; glazes F W A KURZ 19 Sept 1972 43353/72 Headings C1J and C1M A siliceous product is obtained by heating at 1000‹ to 1200‹ C. a fly or filter dust, containing 75-92% of SiO 2 and one or more metal oxides and having a specific surface area of at least 1 m.<SP>2</SP>/g., with one or more other materials, e.g. refractory oxides (Al 2 O 3 ; ZrO 2 ) clays, waste dust from steel or copper manufacture and which can be used in the manufacture of glass compositions and glazes. The product can be porous by including organic burn out materials or gas generators (Al+CaO). The fly dust contains at least one metal oxide and minor amounts of C and S and is preferably that obtained from a Fe-Si; Si-chrome; or Si-Mn manufacture. The mixture is enclosed in a sheet of metal which retains the gases formed at low temperatures to provide a reducing atmosphere but which ruptures at high temperature to give an oxidizing atmosphere.
