Abstract

Porous materials, for use as fire, vermin and moisture proof materials or floats for nets or rafts, are prepared by heating together a powdered silicate material consisting of a natural non-vitreous mineral composed essentially of silica, alumina, and alkali metal oxides, and a gas-generating material containing powdered carbon and an oxygen-containing agent. The mineral may contain 55-77 per cent silica, 13-28 per cent alumina, and 1-18 per cent alkali metal oxides, e.g. nepheline kyanite, felspar, or spodumene, and the oxygen-containing agent may be calcium sulphate, magnesium sulphate, calcium carbonate, antimony trioxide, or arsenic trioxide. To produce a mixture sintering at 1,500-1,800 DEG C., 10-20 per cent of a flux, such as sodium oxide or peroxide, or soda ash, may be added. After firing the product is cooled and annealed.
