Abstract
Ceramic articles are made by firing a moulded mass formed from a mixture of pulverulent ash, free from carbon, obtained from a furnace burning powdered fuel, and an aqueous dispersion of a colloidal silicate or colloidal silica serving as a binding-agent. The binding-agent may be sodium, potassium, or ethyl silicate and does not exceed in amount 5 per cent. of the ash calculated on a dry basis. The article can be glazed either during or after firing, a glaze of relatively high melting-point being produced by adding to the normal glaze titanium dioxide and/or an alumina borosilicate glass. If sodium silicate is used as the binding-agent, the glazing-composition is suspended in ethyl carbonate instead of water. The ash is freed from carbon before mixing by burning in an atmosphere containing oxygen.
