Abstract

A refractory material contains a silicide component and possibly an oxide component, the silicide component being, in addition to 10 to 70 per cent silicon, molybdenum and one or more of the elements carbon, niobium, tantalum, tungsten and vanadium. 0,1 to 99 per cent by vol. of the silicide may be SiC, which may be size graded. The oxide component does not exceed 80 per cent by volume of the material. Specified oxides are mainly as disclosed in Specification 780,735, and the oxide may be stabilized by the addition of a metal. The material can have temporary and permanent binders, e.g., aluminium silicate to help in shaping, preferably by hot pressing. It may be used for making, e.g., a grinding wheel.
