Abstract
A hard alloy for tools and implements contains boron as the main constituent and in addition one or more metals or alloys the melting point of which is above 1000 DEG C. and particularly those that easily form compounds with boron e.g. titanium, zirconium, tungsten, vanadium, chromium, manganese, cobalt, and iron, or alloys of these metals. The tools etc. may be obtained by casting, or by pressing and sintering, in some cases hot pressing being resorted to, preferably in a neutral atmosphere e.g. in argon or hydrogen, or in a vacuum. In an example, a powder comprising boron and 15 per cent of zirconium is heated in vacuo at 1350 DEG C. to expel gases, and afterwards pressed and sintered in vacuo, first at 1800 DEG C. and later at 2100 DEG C.ALSO:A hard alloy for tools and implements contains boron as the main constituent and in addition one or more metals or alloys the melting point of which is above 1000 DEG C. and particularly those that easily form compounds with boron e.g. titanium, zirconium, tungsten, vanadium, chromium, manganese, cobalt, and iron, or alloys of these metals.
