Abstract
A hard alloy for tools, dies, &c., consists of about 15-60 per cent of a carbide or carbides of titanium or vanadium or both, 25-82 per cent of molybdenum or tungsten or both, and 3-15 per cent of aluminium. The sum of the molybdenum, tungsten, and aluminium is preferably at least 50 per cent. Part of the aluminium may be replaced by magnesium or beryllium or both. Up to 5 per cent of iron, nickel, and cobalt may be present, but preferably less than 2 per cent. The alloy may be made by mixing the finely powdered constituents as by rolling them in a barrel, and thereafter sintering at about 3000 DEG F., with or without a preliminary sintering at a lower temperature.
