Abstract

The mechanical properties and the resistance to corrosion of chromium-iron alloys containing about 0.15-4 per cent. carbon and 15-60 per cent chromium are improved by the addition of manganese or nickel or both in a total amount of 0.15-25 per cent. The preferred proportions are 1.2-3.2 per cent carbon, 28-45 per cent chromium, and 1-6 per cent of one or both of manganese and nickel. Other elements such as tungsten, molybdenum, cobalt, vanadium, and titanium may be added. The alloy is suitable for sand or chill casting, particularly in the manufacture of articles which are subject to considerable wear such as drawing dies, roller journals, cylinder linings, &c.
