Abstract

A pair of machine parts moving in contact without lubrication, e.g. plug valves and their casings, pistons and cylinder liners, bearing bushes, race rings, &c. are made from ironchromium alloys of different Brinell hardness. One alloy preferably has a hardness more than 50 per cent greater than the other. The softer alloy may comprise 15-40 per cent of chromium, 0,7-3 per cent of carbon, 1-2 per cent of silicon, and remainder iron except for the usual manganese, phosphorus, and sulphur content, the silicon content being greater than half the carbon content. The harder alloy is similar with a silicon content less than half the carbon content and containing 0,1-1,4 per cent of silicon and if desired an addition of 1-10 per cent of nickel to produce a smooth surface. The hardness may be varied by additions of manganese, molybdenum, and tungsten.
