Abstract

A sintered alloy for tools &c. consists of a carbide of the elements silicon, titanium, zirconium, cerium, or thorium alloyed with at least one of the metals, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, iron, nickel, cobalt, manganese, the carbide amounting to at least 20 per cent of the weight of the alloy. Alternatively, the alloy may consist of 20-97,5 per cent of a mixture comprising at least two carbides of the said elements, silicon, titanium, &c., alloyed with one or more of the said metals, chromium, molybdenum, &c. The sintering is effected preferably at 1400-1700 DEG C., after first pressing the powdered mixture of carbide and auxiliary metal to shape. The carbide particles may also be pressed to shape and brought into contact with a molten auxiliary metal or an alloy of auxiliary metals so as to impregnate the carbide mass with the auxiliary metal. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also alloys in which the elements of the carbon group, silicon, titanium, &c. amount to at least 20 per cent of the alloy. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
