Abstract
Hard alloys for cutting tools &c. comprise carbides of tungsten, carbide and nitride or carbo-nitride of titanium, and a binding alloy of tungsten and cobalt, with or without other metals, particularly molybdenum, chromium, vanadium, and iron, the amount of titanium nitride being up to 20 per cent of the weight of the titanium compounds. The total proportion of carbides and nitrides may be 78-97 per cent of the alloy. The alloys may be made by pressing and sintering the mixed powders, or by fusion and casting, or by impregnation of the sintered hard constituents with molten binding alloy.
