Abstract

316,702. Walter, R. May 11, 1928. Alloys.-Hard alloys suitable for tools &c. contain one or more carbonitrides of metals or non- metals or both, and may also contain one or more nitrides of metals or -non-metals. Examples consist of (1) 10 per cent of tungsten carbonitride added to an alloy of 50 per cent of cobalt, 20 per cent of tungsten, 28 per cent of chromium, and 2 per cent of carbon; (2) 2 per cent of chromium carbonitride, 5 per cent of tungsten carbonitride, 8 per cent of cobalt, 5 per cent of tungsten, and 80 per cent of tungsten carbide. The carbonitrides &c. may be added to alloy steels. Carbonitrides of boron, silicon, and titanium are also referred to as constituents. The products may be obtained by melting or sintering, and in some cases the carbonitride may constitute a predominant part of the alloy.
