Abstract
Hard alloys consist of 68-79 per cent of tungsten carbide, or of tungsten and tungsten carbide of which at least 88 per cent is tungsten carbide, the remainder of the alloy being tantalum carbide and one or more iron group metals with or without tungsten, for example 70-72 per cent of tungsten carbide, a total of 5-7 per cent of iron, nickel, and cobalt, 8 per cent of tungsten, and the remainder tantalum carbide. The alloys are made by heating the ingredients in an inert atmosphere such as a vacuum or the products of dissociation or cracking of ammonia.
