Abstract
Tantalum carbide is prepared by intimately mixing tantalum with carbon, and firing the mixture in a closed graphite tube in a hydrogen furnace at a temperature of about 1550-1600 DEG C. Specification 213,524, [Class 1 (ii), Inorganic compounds, other than &c.], is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 373,708 and 376,299.ALSO:A hard composition suitable for a cutting-tool bit consists of tantalum carbide and a metal binder such as nickel. The composition is prepared by intimately mixing tantalum with carbon, firing the mixture in a closed graphite tube in a hydrogen furnace at a temperature of about 1550-1600 DEG C., grinding the carbide so obtained and mixing it with the binding metal, pressing the mixture to the desired shape, and sintering it in a closed graphite crucible in a hydrogen furnace at a temperature of about 1300 DEG C. Iron or cobalt may be used as the binding metal. A tool bit thus formed may be copper brazed to a steel shank. Specification 213,524, [Class 82 (i), Metals, Extracting &c.], is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use of nickel alloys, e.g. an alloy containing 45 per cent of nickel and 55 per cent of tungsten, or an alloy consisting of about 47 per cent of iron and 53 per cent of molybdenum, as binding material for the tantalum carbide. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 373,708 and 376,299.
