Abstract
Tantalum carbide is prepared by firing an intimate mixture of tantalum and carbon, e.g. gas coke, in a closed graphite tube in a hydrogen furnace. Specifications 319,698, [Class 1 (ii), Inorganic compounds, other than &c.], and 388,090 are referred to.ALSO:A hard metal composition consists of tantalum carbide particles cemented together by a mixture of cobalt and aluminium. The tantalum carbide is prepared by firing an intimate mixture of tantalum and carbon, e.g. gas coke, in a closed graphite tube in a hydrogen furnace. The carbide is mixed with about 13 per cent of a composition consisting of 90 parts of cobalt and 10 parts of aluminium, the mixture is pressed to shape, e.g. a tool bit, and sintered in a closed graphite tube in a hydrogen furnace at about 1300 DEG C. A bit, thus formed, may be copper brazed to a steel shank using a flux such as borax. Specifications 319,698, [Class 1 (ii), Inorganic compounds, other than &c.], and 388,090 are referred to.
