Abstract
Niobium carbide is prepared by mixing niobium and carbon, e.g gas coke, in a ball mill and firing at 1550-1600 DEG C. in a closed graphite tube in a hydrogen furnace as described in Specification 319,698, [Class 1 (ii), Inorganic compounds, other than &c.].ALSO:A sintered metal composition consists of niobium carbide and a binder material of lower melting point than the carbide, such binder material comprising one or more metals of the iron group and the niobium carbide being in excess of the binder material. The binder material may comprise iron, nickel or cobalt, separately or together, and may also comprise a sixth group metal such as tungsten or molybdenum. Niobium and carbon, e.g. gas coke, are mixed in a ball mill and then fired at 1550-1600 DEG C. in a closed graphite tube in a hydrogen furnace as described in Specification 319,698, [Class 1 (ii), Inorganic compounds, other than &c.]. The carbide is then milled, mixed with the powdered binder material and ground in a ball mill. The mixture is subjected to pressure and sintered at 1300-1600 DEG C. in a closed graphite tube in a hydrogen furnace. Specification 389,564 also is referred to.
