Abstract
807.769. Sintered carbide hard metals. FIRTH STIRLING Inc. Jan. 23. 1956 [Feb. 3, 1955], No. 2143/56. Class 82(1) A sintered carbide hard metal comprises tungsten carbide, and titanium carbide in solid solution, the titanium carbide being at least fully saturated with tungsten carbide, together with tungsten carbide and cobalt as auxiliary ingredients, the solid solution being in volume predominance over the auxiliary ingredients and the total tungsten carbide present being in volume predominance over the other ingredients, the composition being such as to fall within the cross-hatched area defined by line 4<SP>1</SP> on the drawing and containing 54.5-63.7 per cent tungsten carbide, 25.5-36.0 per cent titanium carbide and 6.3- 12.0 per cent cobalt by volume. Tantalum carbide may replace up to 50 per cent of the titanium carbide, the total volume content of titanium and tantalum carbides being within the range 25.5-36.0 per cent. The hard metal is formed by mixing powdered titanium and tungsten carbides in proportions to produce the required mixed crystals and heating, e.g. to about 3800‹F. for one hour, cooling the mixed crystal, comminuting, mixing the powdered mixed crystal with powdered tons per square inch and sintering, e.g. at the mixture, e.g. under a pressure of 10-15 tons per square inch and sintering, e.g. at about 2700‹F. for 30-45 minutes in a non- contaminating atmosphere such as hydrogen.
