Abstract
A molybdenum-base alloy suitable for use as a cutting tool material has the following composition: Mo 93.3-97.4 per cent, Co 2.5-6 per cent, Ni 0.1-0.7 per cent. The alloy is prepared by forming a water slurry of molybdenum dioxide, nickel acetate and cobalt acetate, evaporating the water and reducing the compounds to the respective metals by heating the mixture to 1000-1200 DEG C. in hydrogen for up to six hours. The finely divided metal powder is compressed to the desired shape, sintered under non-oxidizing conditions at a temperature of from 1550 DEG C. to 1660 DEG C. for one to three hours and then the alloy is age hardened by heating it in an inert atmosphere, preferably hydrogen, at 650 DEG C. to 750 DEG C. for from four to twenty-four hours.
