Abstract

1405321 Sintered or fused hydrogen storage electrodes DEUTSCHE AUTOMOBIL GmbH 5 Jan 1973 [8 Jan 1972] 751/73 Heading C7D [Also in Division H1] A hydrogen storage electrode is made by adding Li or a Li compound to the base and active materials prior to a final sintering or fusion. Base materials are those which form hydrides by absorption of hydrogen, preferably the metals of group IIIA to VA; and active materials are those which assist in the hydride formation at parameters below which the hydride would not otherwise form preferably Cu, Co, Ag, Fe or Ni/Co steel. The Li may be added as Li 2 O or Li 2 CO 3 e.g. 0.5-5 wt. per cent Li 2 O. The active and base materials are preferably mixed together pressed, sintered and crushed and then moistened powdered Li or Li compound is added and the mixture is then recompacted and resintered in a non-oxidizing atmosphere or vacuum. The sintered or fused compact is cooled in H 2 . In an example a 50 wt per cent TiH 2 <50Á and 50 wt per cent Ni<10Á mixture was compacted, sintered at 850‹C in H 2 and then ground to 50Á. 5 wt per cent Li 2 O was added to the powder and the mixture compacted and sintered at 850‹C in H2.
