Abstract

1279545 Hot pressed TiC-TiN-NiMo E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 20 Nov 1970 [21 Nov 1969] 55288/70 Headings C7A and C7D A composition comprising in percent vol. 49.5-94 TiN, 5-49.5 TiC and 1-15 of a mixture consisting of 20-50 Ni and 50-80 Mo having a density >99% theoretical and an average grain size <2 microns is made by hot pressing the powder mixture at 1650-1900‹ C. and 1000- 5000 p.s.i. and then quenching. The ratio by volume of TiC:Ni-Mo mixture should not exceed 1:1, the TiC and TiN should have particle sizes <1 micron and the Ni-Mo mixture <10 microns. The powder mixture is wet milled at 90 r.p.m. for 5 days and after vacuum drying is stored under N 2 . The powder is charged into a graphite die under N 2 and vacuum hot pressed. The compact is cooled to a dull red heat in about 5 minutes to produce a Rockwell A hardness of 92-94 and a transverse rupture strength of 200, 000-325, 000 p.s.i. The compacts are suitable for use as wear and corrosion resistant parts, metal cutting tools and jewellery such as watch cases.
