Abstract

514,035. Hard carbide alloys. McKENNA, P. M. Dec. 5, 1938, No. 35449. Convention date, Dec. 13, 1937. [Class 82 (i)] [Also in Group V] A mixture of finely comminuted hard carbide material and a metalliferous binder is heated under reduced pressure in the presence of magnesium to a temperature sufficient to cause the binder to flow. The hard carbide may be the double carbide of tungsten and titanium prepared as in Specification 514,033, [Group III], with, if desired, tantalum carbide, or niobium carbide or multicarbides, and the binder may be cobalt or nickel, if desired, with tungsten or molybdenum, the two latter metals being carburized or having carbon with them. The carbide and binder metal are ground separately or together in naphtha and surplus naphtha evaporated until about 1-2 per cent. remains to assist in moulding. The moulded material and some magnesium metal is then heated by stages to 1450‹C. in an evacuated electric induction furnace. The material is suitable for cutting tools, specific mixtures for machining various metals being given. Specification 514,034 also is referred to. -
