Abstract
A hard cemented carbide material contains more than 30 per cent of titanium carbide, lesser amounts of tungsten carbide, tantalum carbide, and a metal or metals of the group cobalt, nickel, iron, the sum of the tungsten carbide and tantalum carbide being at least 25 per cent. The tungsten carbide may be partially replaced by tungsten; the tantalum carbide may be partially replaced by tantalum or niobium or both or wholly or partially by niobium carbide; and, up to 10 per cent of the titanium carbide may be replaced by titanium or an oxide thereof. The material may also contain up to 5 per cent of one or more of chromium, molybdenum, and their carbides. A powdered mixture of the constituents is ground in a ball mill, compacted and then sintered; or, heat and pressure may be applied simultaneously.
