503,397. Alloys. PETERSSON, H. July 6, 1938, No. 31699. Divided out of 504,522. [Class 82 (i)] A hard alloy particularly for tools and dies consists of 20-50 per cent of titanium carbide, 10-30 per cent of molybdenum carbide, 5- 20 per cent of tantalum carbide, 0À01-1 per cent of cobalt, 0À5-5 per cent of boron, 0À5- 5 per cent of silicon, and either 10-30 per cent of tungsten, or 6-22 per cent of molybdenum, or both 2À5-15 per cent of tungsten and 2À5-15 per cent of molybdenum. The alloy is made by subjecting a mixture of the powders to a pressure of about 3400 lb. per sq. in. at about 2500‹ C. Up to 5 per cent of thorium oxide may be added to prevent rapid crystal growth during heating.
