Abstract

455,910. Tools. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. July 20, 1936, No. 20063. Convention date, July 24, 1935. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iii)] A metal-cutting tool bit consists of upper or cutting layer 1 of tantalum carbide with a binder such as cobalt, a foundation layer 3 of tungsten carbide and a binder, and one or more intermediate layers 2 of a binder with tungsten and tantalum carbides in any proportion. The tantalum carbide may be wholly or in part replaced by carbide of another metal of the fifth group, and the tungsten carbide replaced by carbide of another metal of the sixth group such as molybdenum. The tip may be copper brazed to a shank 4. Each layer may contain 3-20 per cent of cobalt as a binder. The foundation layer of powdered material may be placed in a steel mould and covered by the intermediate and top layers also in powdered form. Pressure is applied and the material then sintered in a hydrogen furnace. Alternatively the successive layers of powdered material may be placed in a carbon mould and simultaneously pressed and sintered. If more than one intermediate layer is used, the layers nearer the foundation layer have the greater proportion of tungsten carbide.
