351,189. Grinding; cutting glass. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Taylor, G. F. ; 115, Balltown Road, Schenectady, New York, U.S.A.) May 14, 1930, No. 14841. Convention date, May 14, 1929. [Classes 56 and 60.] Grinding-wheels.-A disc tool for cutting glass &c. consists of a disc 14 about inch <1>/64 thick, of sintered tungsten carbide, molybdenum carbide, or other carbide and cobalt, or other metal of the iron group, welded to discs 12, 15 of relatively soft metal, for example, molybdenum, which are ground to expose a bevelled edge of the disc 14. The tool is formed in a carbon mould 1, by placing therein the molybdenum disc 12, placing thereon a mixture, which may contain water or starch paste as a binder, of from 97 per cent to 75 per cent of powdered tungsten carbide and the remainder of powdered cobalt, and placing the molybdenum disc 15 on the mixture. The discs are then compressed by a carbon plunger 6 and a press 17 to give about 1000 lbs. per square inch on the discs, and a current of electricity is passed from blocks 8 through the mould to raise the temperature to about 1375‹ C. ; a carbon rod 5 serves to form a central aperture in the disc. The completed tool may be mounted on a steel spindle 18, which may be brazed to the discs 12, 15. Specifications 288,521, [Class 82 (i), Metals, Extracting &c.], and 349,732 are referred to.
