Abstract

529,529. Making diamond tools. SMIT & SONS, Inc., J. K., STONE, J. M., and TAYLOR, R. H. June 2, 1939, No. 16257. [Class 124] In making diamond tools such as core bits, dressing tools for trueing grinding-wheels or drawing dies one or more diamonds coated with powdered metal is positioned in a mass of metal powders which is cold pressed and then heated to form a coherent mass with the diamond firmly embedded therein. In one form the diamonds 4 are first coated with aluminium powder which may be suspended in acetone and are placed in a powder mixture 6 which may consist of 25 parts by weight of copper to 75 parts of tungsten or, for a harder setting, of 10 parts of copper and 90 parts of tungsten. The mixture, contained in a holder 2, is compressed by a ram 8 at about twenty tons per square inch. A shank 10 is then inserted over the pressed mass, Fig. 2, welding copper strip wrapped on the shank at 12 and the assembly wired together at 14, placed in an oxygen free furnace and heated to about 2100‹F. for twenty minutes. During this process the welding metal forms a layer 18 securing the shank to the holder which is finally turned or ground away to expose the diamonds, Fig. 4. The welding metal also flows into the matrix 16.
