Abstract

618,429. Making compound welding electrodes. SOC. LE CARBONE LORRAINE. March 1, 1946, No. 6392. Convention date, March 10, 1945. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Uniting by fusion.-A welding electrode containing hard granular carbides such as tungsten carbide inside a thin-walled sheath of soft steel for depositing on a base of iron alloy &c. in the manufacture of boring bits or rings on the end of a tool for boring grinding holes, is deformed after it has been filled so as to retain the carbide grains in the sheath during welding and release them in a regular manner. A circular sheath may be filled with the carbide grains and then rolled into oval form with grooves 2, 3, longitudinal, transverse or helical, or with discontinuous circular or elongated impressions which may be oblique. The carbide may be mixed or alloyed with up to 3 per cent of metals or alloys of lower melting point such as iron, cobalt or nickel, the proportion in the case of cobalt being preferably 0.7 to 1.5 per cent. The carbide and iron, cobalt or nickel may be formed into a sintered agglomerate and then crushed to form grains which are introduced into the sheath.
