Abstract
556,716. Moulding diamond tools. MOPPES, L. E. VAN, MOPPES, E. M. VAN, GODKIN, R., and SMITH, N. R. April 10, 1942, Nos. 4762 and 13283. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIII] A method of making a diamond tool comprises subjecting a mass of powdered metal or alloy surrounding the shank of the diamond to a compacting pressure and then introducing molten brazing metal or alloy into the interstices while at a temperature sufficient to melt the brazing metal ; the brazing metal in powdered form may be intermixed with the powdered metal, and a diamond wheel may be similarly made by substituting powdered diamonds for the diamond. The metal powder may consist of iron and the brazing metal spelter or copper. The iron may be coated with copper or silver chemically or electrolytically ; the shank of the diamond may also be coated. As shown in Fig. 1, the diamond 1 has its point in a recessed block 2 in the lower end of a mould 4 in which iron powder 5 is compacted by a plunger 6. The compressed iron is then placed in a two-part carbon mould 7, 8, Fig. 2, to which the brazing metal in the form of a rod 9 is fed while the mould is heated in an oxygen-free temperature. The pressure may be 500-1,000 lbs. per square inch and the temperature 1960‹ F.
