718,382. Compression-moulding machines for compacting metal powder. SINTERCAST CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Nov. 9, 1951 [Nov. 25, 1950], No. 26254/51. Class 87 (2) [Also in Group XXII] In a method of making heatresisting metal articles, such as parts of gas turbines, in which powder of refractory metals, alloys or metallic carbides is. compacted under pressure, sintered and then infiltrated with a lower melting-point metal, the powder comprises grains substantially all less than 20 microns and is compacted so as to have a pore volume between 37 per cent. and 59 per cent. before sintering. The powder is fed into a mould 15 with a tapered exterior fitting within a holder 16 which is vertically movable in a press bed 18 within the limits determined by a lower flange of a support 17 and by a clamping ring 19 bolted to the bed. Compacting is effected by a hydraulic ram 30 which enters the mould through a cap 26 and spacer ring 28. To the bottom of the holder 16 is bolted a guide 21 for a spring 23 which normally retains the holder in its lower position but which allows the mould to be vibrated by the action of a hydraulic ram 32. After the powder has been compacted, the mould with the article therein is removed and conveyed through a sintering furnace. The porous sintered body is then impregnated with molten metal.
