Abstract
1,220,592. Compacting die. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 31 May, 1968 [8 June, 1967], No. 26590/67. Heading B5A. [Also in Divisions C6-C7] A die for compacting a metallic or ceramic powder or a mixture thereof has at least one surface formed of machinable alumina in contact with the powder. Machinable alumina is defined as alumina produced by cold-pressing followed by low-temperature sintering below the crystallization temperature. An apparatus for compacting and sintering powders e.g. iron, nickel, stainless steel and Ni-Cr alloys, comprises a die block 1 having a cavity 2 in which is located liners 3 of machinable alumina which with plates 9 and 10 also of machinable alumina define the mould cavity 7. The graphite plunger 8 moves in graphite guides 5. Lifting slots 11 and thermocouple receiving bores 12 are provided. In use the mould cavity is filled before insertion of the plate 10 and plunger 8 and the die is then heated e.g. in a vacuum-evacuated electric inductor furnace, the plunger 8 being loaded by a ram acting through a refractory spacer.
