Abstract
555,025. Forming sintered hard metals. FRIEDRICH, W. May, 27, 1942. No. 7207. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91, of the Acts, Nov. 27, 1942.] [Class 82 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] Hard metal bodies, for example drawing dies of tungsten carbide with a matrix of iron, nickel or cobalt, are formed by cold-pressing, presintering, high-sintering and finally heating by high frequency induction means in a vacuum, or inert atmosphere and forging, whilst in such atmosphere, in a closed die to increase the density. The blank 10 is supported by a refractory support or by a thin mica &c. sheet 12 on a refractory spacer 12a above the cavity, in a die 14, which is preferably flared at 26 to facilitate entry under the action of a punch 15 carried by a ram 24 operated by a plunger 27 working through the top of a closed chamber 20. A ball detent 24a maintains the punch clear of the blank during heating by induction from a high frequency coil 11. A member 16 forms the bottom of the die, is shaped to reduce the drilling required on the drawing die, and is supported by a hard metal ring 18 in a watercooled base 19. The chamber is evacuated, or supplied with inert gas, at 25, and is fitted with a window 20a for temperature control by an optical pyrometer.
