618,824. Casting processes. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Nov. 11, 1946, No. 33516. Convention date, Nov. 13, 1945. [Class 83 (i)] A mould 11 for casting anodes, particularly for X-ray tubes, has heat-insulating means 15 enclosing part of the mould to retard the cooling of the copper, iron, nickel or other cast metal in this part. The insulator 15 may have the form of a sleeve resting on a rib or a step 17 of the mould and be made of one or more of the oxides or silicates of aluminium, beryllium, or zirconium &c. The mould 11 may be made of graphite. Casting composite articles.-A target disc 13 of tungsten, platinum, rhenium, uranium, &c., may be secured by wires 14 to a graphite insert block 12, Fig. 2, resting on an integral bottom of a uniform mould for a rotating type anode or on a separate base-plate 18, Fig. 1, of a mould for a stationary anode with an enlarged end. If a hollow anode is required, a core 19 is supported in the mould. Casting may be effected in a vacuum casting furnace, or one containing nitrogen, hydrogen, argon, or other inert or reducing gas, by pouring in molten metal or inserting a solid piece and then heating the mould.
