Abstract
554,413. Casting processes. LANDAU, B. Dec. 30, 1941, No. 16774. [Class 83 (i)] Castings of tungsten, titanium, &c. carbides, having a melting point of over 2800‹ C., are made by placing powder of said carbide, or of substances capable of forming it, in a graphite or coal mould, heating this in a graphite furnace to above the melting point of the carbide and then cooling rapidly enough to prevent crystallization. The mould may be boat-shaped and be introduced into a graphite tube heated by passing an electric current through it to about 3100‹ C. When the carbide has been molten for 3 to 4 seconds the temperature is lowered by about 300‹ C. and the boat is withdrawn. The furnace should have an atmosphere of carbondi-oxide, with or without carbon-mon-oxide, or other non-oxidizing gas. The casting may be a mixture of different carbides. Specification 506,486 is referred to.
