Abstract

A process for the production of shaped articles from hafnium, zirconium, titanium or thorium or alloys of these metals, which involves treatment of such metal in the molten state in vacuo or in a noble gas atmosphere, is characterized in that the said treatment is carried out in apparatus having surfaces, in contact with the molten metal, made of carbon, graphite or high melting carbides, e.g. carbides of hafnium, zirconium titanium, tungsten, molybdenum and tantalum. Ingots may be made by melting the metal under vacuum in a graphite crucible and transferring it to a cold mould having a graphite surface. Alloys of the metals may be made by melting the metals in the said apparatus and adding alloying metals.
