Abstract

A method of making a dense and substantially non-porous article from a mixture of two or more powdered metals, one of which is soluble in another, comprises sintering the mixture, without the prior application of external pressure and without the use of a binder, at a temperature below the melting point of at least one of the metals, but such that a liquid phase is present, that is, such that one metal passes into solution in another. As applied to the manufacture of a wedge-shaped article from a mixture of copper, nickel and tungsten powders, the mixture is loosely packed in a wedge-shaped mould arranged with its plane of symmetry vertical. If the mould is of refractory material it may be heated to the full temperature required, that is 1450 DEG C. If the mould will not withstand such a temperature, it may be heated to, say, 1000 DEG C. so that the particles of metal adhere sufficiently to form a coherent body which is then removed from the mould for the final sintering.
