Abstract

In a method of making a metal article, metal in the form of powder, small blocks or strips is packed into a mould formed of a substance which will not mix, coalesce or harmfully affect the charge and then heated in a non-oxidising atmosphere by high frequency induction. The charge may be heated to sintering temperature and then compressed or it may be melted in the mould. For steel, the sintering temperature would be between 860 DEG C. and 960 DEG C. and the preusure from 1 to 1 1/2 tons per square centimetre. The mould may be of a refractory non-metallic material or of a metal having a melting point considerably higher than that of the charge and is preferably lined with sillimanite or zirconia. A layer of diamonds or other abrasive material may be incorporated in the charge within the mould. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 341,649, [Group XXII], 452,411 and 452,503.
