Abstract

554,110. Porous metal articles. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. July 21, 1942, No. 10125. Convention date, Aug. 28, 1941. [Class 82 (i)] Porous metal articles of cylindrical or like shape are made by distributing metal powder into a layer of the required shape and sintering the_ layer while it is held in place by centrifugal force. In the apparatus shown the powder is fed into a rotary mould 22, in which a layer 42 of the required thickness is formed by means of a scraper, the mould having split linings 30, 34 with conical surfaces as shown. The mould is then heated externally or internally, for example by an induction furnace 48, to effect sintering of the layer, and a controlled atmosphere may be admitted through a tube 54 during sintering.
