[Class 67] [Also in Groups II and XXII] A stud for horseshoes comprises a wear resisting pin 1, of, for example, cemented tungsten carbide, set in a steel holder 3 formed by moulding and sintering metal powder around the pin. Mixing powders comprising iron together with carbon 0.3-0.4 per cent., chromium 1.5-2 per cent., nickel 4.5-5 per cent., and copper 3.0-3.5 per cent. are compressed in a steel die around the pin at a pressure of from 10 to 50 tons per square inch and the compact is then sintered in a non-oxidising atmosphere at a temperature of from 1,000‹C. to 1,350‹C. The surface of the pin may be plated to facilitate bonding and a ring of copper may be placed around the projecting end of the stud after compacting but before sintering, so that the copper will diffuse into the adjacent surfaces of the materials of the pin and holder.
