Abstract

552,532. Making piston-rings. BRITISH PISTON RING CO., Ltd., TWIGGER, T. R., and JUDD, J. A. Jan. 23, 1942, No. 965. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] In the manufacture of piston rings from powdered metal, the pressed and sintered product is repressed cold, at a temperature insufficient to cause oxidization, to impart the required shape, or when such shape has previously been imparted to remove irregularities. The repressing may be followed by annealing. The repressing may be effected by pressing the ring e, Fig. 1, through a die a by a punch d'having the shape required. The die is circular at a<SP>1</SP> tapering to a form at c exactly corresponding to that of the punch. In a modification the ring is located on the shoulder h<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 3, of a die of the required form and is shaped and consolidated by a punch f having a shoulder f<SP>1</SP> and a taper lead i. Specifications 538,227, [Group II], 538,679 and 551,232 are referred to.
