[Also in Group XXII] A method of securing a piston 10, Figs. 1 and 2, to a piston-rod 18 comprises inserting the piston-rod into a shouldered opening 12 in the piston so that its end engages the shoulder 16 of the opening, and deforming an annular ring 22 into locking position in a recess 20 in the piston-rod. The piston 10, shown in Fig. 1, is made of a deformable metal such as steel and has a counterbore 14 into which the piston-rod 18 is inserted so that its end abuts the shoulder 12; in this position, the recess 20 aligns with the ring 22 which is formed integrally with the piston. The piston and pistonrod so assembled are then mounted over a die block 24, Fig. 2, so that the piston-rod is disposed in the opening 26. With the piston-rod then biased upwardly by a spring to position the ring 22 just above a conical deforming surface 30 of the die block 24, pressure is applied by the descending ram 28 of the press to force the ring 22 downwardly into engagement with the surface 30 and deform it into firm fluidtight contact with the recess. In the modification, shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the piston 40 which is of a non-deformable material such as cast iron, is provided with a counterbore 46 forming a shoulder 48 against which the shoulder of a piston-rod 42 abuts and a recess 50 provided in the piston-rod aligns with a counterbore 52 in the face 60 of the piston. A malleable-metal two-part ring 54 is located in the counterbore 52 and recess 50. The assembly is then mounted in a press similar to that described above and the inclined surface 70 of an upper die-block 68 is forced downwardly by a ram into engagement with the ring 54 to thereby swage it into the recess 50. The abutting end of the piston-rod, its mating shoulder 16 or 48 in the piston, and the shoulder formed by the recesses 20 or 50 in the pistonrod may be in the form of a series of disconnected abutment surface portions instead of continuous surfaces as shown.
