Abstract

1353219 Forging rivets STANDARD PRESSED STEEL CO 20 Nov 1971 54008/71 Heading B3H [Also in Division F2] A method of forming a rivet comprises preparing an integral blank 10 of deformable metallic material, which blank has a cylindrical shank 12 and a head 14 of greater diameter than the shank, placing the blank in a cavity of an extrusion die 16, applying force to the blank to cause a portion of the head to move further into the cavity so as to flow and be selectively coldworked, thereby work hardening the material of the head portion while maintaining the shank in its initial workable condition. The blank 10 is removed from the die by punching to give a formed blank (10<SP>1</SP>), Fig. 3 (not shown), which has a frusto-conical portion (28) and cylindrical segment (26) as a result of the extrusion of the head portion. The blank (10<SP>1</SP>) which may be made of various alloy steels, may be subjected to an age-hardening cycle, e.g. 4 hours at 1200‹ F. The blank is then machined to its final shape 10<SP>11</SP>. In installation of the rivet, Fig. 5 (not shown), the hardened shank portion (26<SP>1</SP>) is placed in hole (44) between plates (40), (42) with the hardened head portion 28<SP>1</SP> and more ductile tail portion 1211 extending from either side of the plates. The rivet is then squeezed whereupon the tail (12<SP>111</SP>) is workhardened.
