Abstract

1,186,760. Riveting. MASSEY-FERGUSONPERKINS Ltd. 12 Nov., 1968 [2 Dec., 1967], No. 54916/67. Heading B3U. [Also in Division F2] The underface of the head of a rivet has an annular recess 5 of which the radially innermost face is the peripheral wall of the shank, and the head has a central, flat, upper face 6 of smaller area than the overall cross-sectional area of the head, so that after the rivet has been placed in a clearance hole and its tail end upset so that the shank is a fit in said hole, pressure may be applied to the flat face of the head to press more of the shank into the hole, so that the shank forms an interference fit in the hole. The flat face is preferably circular and of the same diameter as the shank, and the head is preferably chamfered at 7. The rivet may be of 0À35 to 0À45% carbon steel and have a Brinell Hardness Number of 197 to 241. The hole 8 in the workpiece may be enlarged at the tail end to form a recess 12 into which the tail is upset by anvil 14. The head is then pressed with anvil 13, with or without anvil 14 in position, to press more of the shank into the hole.
