Abstract

1347957 Riveting VSI CORP 25 July 1972 34783/72 Heading B3U [Also in Division F2] A rivet 13 for insertion into a cylindrical bore 12 has a shank 15 formed as a sequence of sections of progressively reduced diameter in a direction away from the head 14, the smallest section 15d fitting freely in the bore 12, a first intermediate section 15c having a slight interference, e.g. 0À0001 to 0À003 inch, in the bore to centre the rivet therein, a second intermediate section 15b with a greater interference, e.g. 0À001 to 0À006 inch, preferably 0À004 inch, in the bore, and a section 15a tapering from the head to the second intermediate section 15b to compress the material surrounding the bore to improve fatigue resistance. The section 15a typically has a taper of 0À25 inch/foot length and at its larger end has an interference of 0À005 to 0À009 inch relative to the bore 12. The shoulders 27, 28 between the sections are tapered at an angle not greater than 15 degrees. There may be a short parallel section (15e) (Fig. 5, not shown) adjacent the rivet head. The rivet is of titanium alloy. The rivet is first driven into the bore 12 by a tool 25, the smallest diameter section 15d is cut off, e.g. at 21, and the projecting end of the rivet shank is upset by a tool 22, the section 15b being compressed to form a taper in the opposite sense to that of section 15a.
