Abstract

853,004. Making turbine blades. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. May 21, 1959 [May 21, 1958], No. 16397/58. Class 83 (2). In the manufacture of a turbine blade from a blank having axial cooling or heating passages and a laterally extended tip shroud portion 13 formed by forging or upsetting, the shroud portion is further shaped in a die 15, 15a having a cavity 16 extending beyond the end of the blank and into which some of the blank metal flows to thus straighten out the passages 17 therein. A starting billet with through or blind holes filled with mild steel is first partially extruded, Fig. 3 (not shown), and the end of the extruded portion is then upset to form the shroud portion 13, Fig. 6 (not shown), wherein the passages are deformed. Further forging in the split die 15, 15a straightens out the passages and the resulting blank is then machined to its final shape, Fig. 9 (not shown), with axial through passages. The filler is removed prior to machining.
