761,677. Making bearings. GLACIER METAL CO., Ltd. Feb. 2, 1955 [Feb. 23, 1954], No. 5335/54. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). Forging.-In apparatus for forming a plain semi-cylindrical bearing by pressing .a pre. formed U-shaped blank 21 between an outer die 1, and an inner die 9, 10 having abutment surfaces 11, 12 which press on the parallel straight edges 22 of the blank and compress it circumferentially, the inner die is adapted to apply to the parts of the blank adjacent the edges 22 a radial compression force which prevents any substsntial thickening of the blank at these parts. The upper die comprises a pair of relatively slidable die members 7, 8 located together by a tongue and groove connection 17, 18 and having die segments 9, 10. These die members are biased inwardly by springs 19 against the inclined surfaces of a wedge 4 carried by the press ram 3. A spring-loaded plunger 20 biases the die members against a head 16 on the wedge. Upon descent of the ram, the die segments 9, 10 engage the inner wall of the blank at substantially the same moment as the abutments 11, 12 engage the faces 22 and thereafter the wedge presses the segments 9, 10 outwardly to reduce the wall thickness of the blank against the edges 22 whilst the blank is compressed circumferentially. Outward movement of the die members is limited by their engagement with a block 15. The U-shaped blank 21 is formed by bending from a flat blank.
