Abstract

1340486 Forging dies GKN FORGINGS Ltd 19 April 1971 [12 Dec 1969] 60633/69 Heading B3H A forging die comprises a first punch 21 fixed to a base plate, a second punch 20 on which a die 24 is slidable and a mandrel 30 slidable in the first punch. The die is spring- biased away from the second punch and the mandrel is biased by a spring 31 towards the second punch. The punches, die and mandrel define a closed annular die cavity for a workpiece 23. During forging the workpiece flows to engage the die wall 25 and the mandrel surface and the die and mandrel move downwards with the workpiece during forging. Thus the friction between the die and mandrel and the workpiece is eliminated. The biasing may be hydraulic instead of springs. In a second embodiment, Fig. 3, the die (45) is slidably mounted on the fixed first punch (40). The workpiece may be a metal powder compact which may have been sintered.
