Abstract

1359214 Punching SUZUKI MOTOR CO Ltd 28 May 1971 [29 May 1970] 17888/71 Heading B3W A press for punching a blank 24 from a workpiece 23 comprises dies 15 and 7, one mounted on a floatable bolster 14 and the other on an hydraulically actuated main bolster 6 and punches 8 and 16. The die apertures are aligned and of substantially the same dimensions and the working faces of the dies have relative dimensions such that as one die is moved towards the other the workpiece is subjected to plastic deformation between the dies to form a compressed annular portion 23a, while the punch 8 is withdrawn to accommodate the blank, and either punch 8 or 16 is actuated to shear the blank from portion 23a. The other of the punches ejects the blank. As shown, the die 15 is mounted on the bolster 14 which is floatable under hydraulic pressure and the punches are hydraulically actuated. Alternatively, the floating mounting of the bolster may be provided by an annular plate spring (not shown) and the hydraulic actuation of the punch 16 may be replaced by a spring or elastic material, e.g. rubber. Adjustable stops 13 and 22 limit the stroke of the punch 16 and the die 7 respectively. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,271,377.
