Abstract

1,061,343. Metal marking presses. R. C. HOWARD, and L. W. McDOWELL. April 2, 1965 [May 11, 19641, No. 14025/65. Heading B3H. A fluid-operated press, particularly for working metals, comprises a stationary bed 12 with vertical guide posts 14 on which is slidable a ram 16, a thrust plate 22 fixed to the guide posts, and an unarticulated elastic bag 24 fixed to the thrust plate and resting upon the ram and which is supplied with pressure fluid for moving the ram towards the bed. The fluid may be hydraulic but is preferably pressurized air supplied to the rubber bag 24 through an accumulator 110, solenoid-operated valve 90 and duct 88. Springs assemblies 91 are used to return the ram which may make up to 450 strokes per minute. The posts 14 are locked in the bed 12 by snap rings 34, Fig. 5 (not shown) and the ram 16 has replaceable bushes 44 sliding on the posts. Thrust plate 22 with the actuating mechanism is removably secured to the posts by split collars 56, 58 which permits the stroke position to be varied. This also enables the actuating mechanism to be used with different ram and bed assemblies and hence with different die sets.
