Abstract

1,224,543. Punching. FEINTOOL A.G. 27 May, 1968 [5 June, 1967], No. 25280/68. Heading B3W. A fine punching device comprises a stationary die 4 with a counter punch 7 mounted in the die opening 6 and a punch 19 which extends through a contact plate 14 formed with a ring of teeth 17 and mounted in a reciprocable punch table, the cutting edge 12 around the die opening 6 being substantially convex, Fig. 3. Instead of a curve the cutting edge may comprise three faceted faces in planes (23), (24) and (25), Fig. 2 (not shown). In use, the punch table is moved upwardly with a workpiece between the die 4 and contact plate 14, the counter-punch 7 being first pushed into the die opening 6 until its surface 21 is level with the die surface 8. The workpiece is then clamped between the die and the plate 14, the teeth 17 penetrating the workpiece to prevent its displacement during simultaneous upward movement of punch 19 and counterpunch 7. The blank thus formed, which is said to have a smooth edge, remains in the die opening 6 when the punch 19 is lowered and is ejected by the counterpunch 7. The die 4 is preferably formed of hard porous metal, e.g. sintered or cemented carbides and lubricant fed to the die opening 6 and cutting edge 12 forms a deposit in the pores which helps to retain a film of lubricant between the die 4 and the workpiece during punching.
